Tattoo Basics
When most people decide to get a tattoo, they spend most of their time thinking about the design that they want. And while it's important to get the right design, it's just as vital to select the right part of your body to position your new design.
Let's face it, you may find a tattoo design that you love, but if it sits on a highly visible part of your body, even you may quickly grow tired of seeing it. So with that in mind here are the most important things to consider about tattoo placement.
1) Visible Or Hidden
One of the first things to think about is whether you want your tattoo to be highly visible or whether you want to be able to hide it under your norrmal clothing.
Consider your personality and your general attitude towards life. If you've got a confident, outgoing personality, you may choose to place your tattoo on a part of your body which is visible most of the time.
On the other hand, if your personality is more reserved, you should seriously consider whether it's a good idea to choose a prominent location for your tattoo. Could you cope with all the additional attention and comments that it creates?
There's also your general lifestyle and work to take into account. Are you generally involved in formal social activities? For example, if you're a woman are you prepared for your tattoo to visible when you're wearing a strapless dress.
Does your employer or code of professional conduct have any rules about visible tattoos? For example, in many parts of the world law enforcement officers and people who work in the legal profession aren't allowed to display tattoos. And for reasons of professionalism, many other highly responsible careers view tattoos in a negative manner.
Whatever happens, make sure you check out the situation before you go anywhere near a tattoo studio. And if you anticipate that either of these situations could be a problem it might be best to select a tattoo placement that you can cover up with clothes or jewelry.
And finally, think how your partner or spouse may feel about your new tattoo. Are they keen for you to get a tattoo placed on a visible area of your body? Will they see it as an attempt to attact attention from other people? Would they prefer you to keep your tattoo hidden so that it's for your eyes only?
Ultimately, the issue of whether or not it's your first tattoo might help you decide whether your tattoo should be visible or hidden.
If it's your fist tattoo it might be best to play safe and place it in an area where it can be easily hidden by your normal clothing. This will give you a chance to experience what it's like to wear a tattoo.
However, if you've already got a tattoo, and you've experienced what it's like to live with a tattoo day to day, you may want to be more adventurous and place it in a more prominent position.
